Panel Choices, the Honest Trade Offs

Solid aluminum panels are the workhorse. Zero maintenance, block sun completely, hold up to snow. Insulated aluminum panels add an interior foam core so the space stays cooler in summer and quieter in rain. Polycarbonate or clear panels let light through and are great over gardens or if you want the sky visible, but they show dirt and can yellow after a decade.

Why the Footings Are the Whole Job

The single most common patio cover failure in the Inland Northwest is post heave. A cover that looks perfect in summer racks itself out of square by February because the footings were poured shallow. Attached vs Freestanding

Attached covers ledger to the house and cost less. They also require proper flashing to the wall or they leak into the siding. Freestanding covers stand on their own posts, cost a bit more, and eliminate the wall waterproofing question entirely. If your house has old siding or you are anywhere near the fascia, freestanding is often the better call.
