The Three Things That Kill a Deck Early

Ledger flashing, footings, and fasteners. If the ledger is not flashed to the house, water runs behind it and rots your rim joist. If footings are not below frost line, the deck heaves in the winter. If fasteners are not rated for treated lumber, they corrode and the deck falls apart. All three are code.

Composite vs Wood, the Honest Answer

Composite costs more up front but zero maintenance for the life of the deck. Wood costs less up front but you are staining or sealing every 2 to 3 years. If you are staying in the house 10 years or more, composite pencils out. If you are selling in 3, wood is fine.

Do decks need a permit in Spokane Valley?

Any deck attached to the house or over 30 inches high requires a permit. Ground level detached platforms often do not. We check before we start.

How long does a deck take to build?

Small deck: 3 to 5 days. Large multi level with railings and stairs: 1 to 2 weeks.
